Light is the key, as much in her paintings as in her photography.
Lydia van der Meer is an international press photographer and painter. She studied at the School of Photography in The Hague. She began her professional career at a photo agency in Utrecht before moving to London, where she worked for the Financial Times, the international business newspaper, and Dutch national newspapers and magazines such as De Volkskrant, NRC, Telegraaf, and Trouw.
She remained with the Financial Times for 25 years, more than 10 of which were in London. She photographed global figures such as Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, and the Dalai Lama, as well as stars from the fashion and entertainment world, including Stevie Wonder, Kate Moss, and Dame Vera Lynn. Her work has been featured in many international publications and exhibitions.
Driven to continue to challenge herself, and building upon elements of photography such as light, composition, and color, she turned to painting, which had always inspired her. She studied in Haarlem and Leiden to further develop her skills and techniques. She works from her own studio, and her artworks are regularly featured in both solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad. Lydia lives in Overveen.
